Catalan Forum for Peace

What is the Catalan Forum for Peace?

The Catalan Forum for Peace is a participatory process of reflection and debate that will last two years (2024-2025) and which, with the motto “Less violence, more global justice“, aims to answer the following questions:

  • How do we understand Catalonia at peace?
  • How do we contribute from Catalonia to peace in the world?

The Forum is an open process to which all organizations and institutions committed to the values of a culture of peace and global justice can be linked.

Background

With its enduring tradition of peace promotion, Catalonia has consistently demonstrated its commitment to fostering peace, domestically and globally. This steadfast dedication was further solidified in 2003 when the Parliament passed the groundbreaking Peace Promotion Law, a testament to the unwavering resolve of Catalan institutions to champion peace, both within conflict-ridden nations and within Catalonia itself.

Establishing the Catalan Peace Promotion Council and the ICIP (International Catalan Institute for Peace) under the Peace Promotion Law marked a significant step towards peace. Simultaneously, numerous municipalities and local bodies in Catalonia have spearheaded initiatives, fostering a sense of collective responsibility for peace promotion. Civil society organizations have played a crucial role in raising public awareness and promoting a shared commitment to peace through campaigns and social mobilizations, making peace promotion a collaborative effort.

Therefore, we can affirm that Catalonia has a rich social, institutional, academic, and cultural ecosystem committed to the values and culture of peace. However, in recent years, the social, political, economic, and cultural dynamics have changed significantly, and new challenges for coexistence, human rights, equality, and democracy have been generated worldwide and at home.

In this context, the Catalan Council for the Promotion of Peace promotes the Catalan Forum for Peace, a participatory process of analysis and reflection to strengthen Catalan public peace policy and social and political advocacy agendas and capacities of social organizations.

Goals

The Catalan Forum for Peace has a double objective:

  • Develop a country plan of peace
  • Strengthen the movement for peace in Catalonia

To develop the country’s peace plan, the Catalan Forum for Peace has created three channels for citizen participation:

  1. Deliberative sessions
  2. Self-managed sessions
  3. Online participation

To strengthen the movement for peace in Catalonia, the Catalan Forum for Peace will give prominence to Catalan peace organizations, grouped mainly inĀ laFede.cat, the Solidarity NGO Coordinator of the Girona counties and Alt Maresme and the Federation of the Development Cooperation Network of the South of Catalonia.

All entities or institutions in Catalonia committed to the values of the culture of peace described in the Peace Promotion Law can join the Catalan Forum for Peace and organize or promote activities throughout the years 2024 and 2025.
