ICIP president appears before Parliament

In accordance with the law by which ICIP was established, the president of the institution, Rafael Grasa, appeared before the Commission of External Action, European Union and Cooperation of the Parliament of Catalonia on Friday, December 12, in order to present the ICIP Annual Activity Report for 2013.
The president set forth ICIP’s three main work areas: Training and Dissemination, Research and Knowledge Transfer, and Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention. Of the work done over the last two years, Grasa highlighted, for example, the consolidation of the four ICIP book series (published in collaboration with various Catalan publishers), the consolidation of the ICIP Peace in Progress Award (awarded in 2014 to the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom), the successful conclusion of the first doctoral theses financed by F-ICIP grants, the constant field work in Colombia or the consolidation of the ICIP Library as a model in Catalonia in the field of peace culture and conflict resolution, with more than 6,000 catalogued books.
The president of ICIP stated that the main challenges for the year that lies ahead are the drafting of the new Multi-Annual Plan, which will replace the current one, extended since 2012, and promoting research. Grasa also announced that the head office, presently located at Gran Via, 658, in Barcelona, would be moved to Carrer Tapineria, 10, also in Barcelona.
The spokespersons of the various parliamentary groups present in the commission congratulated ICIP on the work it carries out, especially in the context of cuts in resources that have affected the Institute over the last few years.
At the beginning of the session, the president of ICIP wished to say a few words in memory of Alfons Banda, former vice president of the institution, who passed away on January 30, 2014.

ICIP welcomes Nobel Peace Prize 2014

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize to Pakistani girl MalalaYousafzai and Indian activist Kailash Satyarthi for their struggle for the right of all children to education. The Swedish Academy notes that access to education is a requirement for peace, and highlights both the “courage” of Kailash Satyarthi, promoter of the Global March Against Child Labor, and the “heroic struggle” of MalalaYousafzai, despite her young age and the dangerous circumstances she has had to face.
The International Catalan Institute for Peace (ICIP) applauds the joint award and considers that it is well-deserved since both award winners lead social struggles in favor of human rights, such as the right of all boys and girls to education and the struggle against child labor.
ICIP is pleased that, with this award, the Swedish Academy has taken into consideration the Gandhian tradition of disobedience and social denunciation and has wanted to send a message of fraternity between nations, since both award winners hail from countries such as India and Pakistan, with longstanding unresolved conflicts. It also considers that the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize brings prestige back to an award that has often been controversial.
