Callixte Mbarushima, one of the suspects sought by the International Criminal Court, detained in France
On 11 October 2010, the French authorities detained Callixte Mbarushima for his alleged responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, according to an arrest warrant from the ICC. The suspect will remain in French custody while the Court's application is under consideration.
The ICC's preliminary hearings chamber considers that there are reasonable grounds for believing that the individual in custody, a 47-year-old Rwandan, was the Executive Secretary of the Forces démocratiques pour la libération du Rwanda - Forces combatantes Abacunguzi (FDLR-FCA) and is legally responsible, according to article 25(3) of the Statute of Rome, for crimes against humanity (murder, inhuman acts and persecution) and war crimes (attacks on the civilian population, destruction of property, murder, torture, rape and inhuman treatment). These crimes were committed during the armed conflict in the provinces of Kivu in 2009.
